Let’s begin Friday, May 16, 2008 Day 6 – Tour City & Ruins Tour

As you can imagine a trip full of tours can be a bit overwhelming! Thursday night I felt exhausted and really had enough of tours and ruins. I guess my body had enough. So Thursday evening after dinner I decided to call my tour company and cancel the City and Ruins Tour.

Friday morning I woke at 10 am after a restful night sleep. I straitened my hotel room and got things semi packed for my next adventure to the Amazon Jungle. I went through the gifts I purchased at the Pisac Market and noticed I didn’t buy enough Serpentine bracelets for the ladies in my life. So now the hunt was on trying to find more.

I spent half the morning running around in every gift shop trying to find the exact match of bracelet. I found a couple but not the amount I needed. So after a long and exhausted try I decided to purchase similar bracelets but different stones. This day was suppose to be an easy going one but turned out to be exhausting as I ran out of time and only had this day left to make my purchases.

The rest of my day I organized my photographs and uploaded a few to my Flickr stream so my family and friends could view the places and people I’ve seen and met.

When I did my research before booking my trip to Peru, I looked at many photographs of Cusco. A few photographs I wanted to capture myself. I photographed Cusco plenty in the day time when I arrived and now I wanted to photograph Cusco at night.

I love the center of Cusco as it has so much spark. Below I wanted to photograph the fountain, the shops and the people who come out to rest or stroll through the main square. I’ve photographed the center during the day, now I wanted to capture it at night.

I had some fun below. I set my shutter on 1/20 to capture no visible cars but captured their headlights as the drove past me. View full post »

Thursday, May 15, 2008 Day 5 – Tour Pisac Market & Ollantaytambo

My day started at 8:30 am traveling through the a scenic landscape to the Urubamba Valley, the “Sacred Valley of the Incas”.  Before we arrive at the town of Pisac we make a quick stop at Awana Kancha. At Awana Kancha I got to see all 4 camelids: Alpaca, Llama, Guanaco and the famed Vicuna with its super-fine wool.

Awana Kancha

We were given a short presentation about two brothers who created the idea of Awana Kancha (translated: Palace of the Master Weaver) back in 1989. They informed us of the history of the animals and their importance as a source of food and clothing in Pre-Columbian culture and the current peoples of Peru.

We also were allowed to feed the adult llamas and alpacas some fresh alfalfa (their main food staple). View full post »

Let’s begin. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Day 4 – Traveling by train to Machu Picchu

I woke at 4:30 am which is like waking up at 1 am California time. Talk about crazy! Once again I rushed to shower and head upstairs for light breakfast as my train departed on-time at 6:30.  My personal guide took me straight to the train station where I quickly boarded. I knew that the train ride was roughly about 8 hours long so I brought a few snacks with me and had my camera out in case I saw something interesting. I think these next couple of photographs will speak for themselves.

I took the photograph below through the train window. I really like seeing the landscape in the background and the women in the foreground with her baby on her back working hard keeping those cows in line. She wasn’t alone as she had her dog helping.

During the 8 hour train ride we passed by so many cities/towns/villages. I saw a few men and women standing their selling their goods.

In this blog entry I’m going to walk you through my day 3 in Cusco, Peru.

Let’s begin. Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Day 3 - Flying from Lima to Cusco

My day started bright and early with a transport to the airport to take me from Lima to Cusco. Not a long flight as I believe is less than an hour.

The first thing that hits the arrived visitor to Cusco are the Inca walls; enormous granite blocks carved to fit together perfectly without the aid of mortar beds. Many of the walls were simply built upon during the construction of a new Spanish city. It’s a tribute to the Incas that their anti seismic design has survived the test of time while the Spanish colonial architecture has been rebuilt several times following a wave of earthquakes that have hit the city. Cusco was referred to as the ‘Navel of the World’.

When I travel alone I don’t always have to stay in a 5 Diamond resort. In fact I’m not sure of the rating at the Casa Andina but it was always clean and the staff is always happy to help you with what ever you request. When I’m traveling I only use the hotel for sleeping and showering. This trip my goal was to stay in a clean room/hotel and get me out on tours to maximize each day to the fullest. View full post »

I love the fountain pictures and the lady walking with her llama!
My goodness, look at all those steps! Can’t imagine just walking up that one!
The image with the ladies selling their goods is a funny one because the ‘internet’ sign just feels out of place!
