Defination of “Quinceanera”

I had the pleasure of photographing my first Quinceanera on Saturday, April 4, 2009.  I sit here processing hundreds of photo and I thought I would share with you what the true meaning of a Quinceanera. In the next couple of days I’ll be showing you what a Quinceanera looks like as I’ve experienced it for the first time not  as a guest but as a photographer . Let me tell you, it was as if I was photographing a wedding. My feet still hurt!

Meaning of the word

The word quinceanera breaks up into two words: quince and anera. Quince translates into 15 and anera is word derived from anos to indicate performing the act of. Thus, anera translates as a woman changing age. Together, both words comprise the definition a woman turning 15.

Importance of the quinceanera

The quinceanera is a young Hispanic woman’s celebration of her fifteenth birthday. This birthday is celebrated differently from her other birthdays. The quinceanera is considered to be the most important birthday as it symbolizes the transition from childhood to womanhood. This event is usually celebrated with an elaborate ritual.

Celebration of the quinceanera

An elaborate ritual is executed to celebrate the quinceanera. The celebration begins with a Thanksgiving mass (Misa de Acción de Grácias). At this mass, the quinceanera is accompanied by a head chamberlain (chambelan), several other chamberlains, maids of honor (damas), her parents, and godparents (padrinos). The quinceanera, chamberlains, and maids are all dressed in formal attire, but the quinceanera is uniquely and the chamberlains and maids are in matching attire. Sometimes the head chamberlain is dressed uniquely as well to distinguish him from the rest of the chamberlains. At this mass, the quinceanera, along with the rest of her family and friends, thank God for all their blessings.

After the mass, a feast usually follows either at the family’s home or at a banquet hall. At this feast there is food and dancing. Special party favors (recuerdos) at distributed to the guests to remember this special event. During this feast a celebration danced is performed. It usually comprises of a choreographed waltz with the quinceanera, the chamberlains and maids of honor. In this waltz it is customary to have a portion dedicated to symbolizing the transition from childhood to womanhood. In this special dance there is also a portion dedicated for the quinceanera to thank her father, and other relatives, with a dance.

Maternity Photography Session with the Ackerman’s

Meet the Ackerman’s. The family is expecting their second child later this month. The photography session was done on Saturday, March 28, 2009. The family came to me from a referral. They are a really sweet family and I was totally excited they booked with me. In these maternity photographs below, she’s due later this month.

Fabi warned me about her 2 year old son Noah during our consultation. She mentioned that each time someone wanted to photograph him, he puts his hands in the air and says no. So I went into the session knowing it might be a challenge for me. So I warmed him up by talking and explaining what I was doing as he was asking me questions. “What is this”? I pulled out the camera for the first time and yep, he went into the corner and said no. So I told him how handsome he was and to look at the photograph I had in the camera of him. MAGIC, I was saved. From that point forward he always wanted to view the images. He’s such a great kid and he’s going to be a great big brother! Thank you Noah for a fun day!

I love getting the father of the baby involved. I love seeing that emotional bond between Daddy and soon to be baby. Bryan here is on one knee huging the tummy. I really feel the emotion in this photography. I hope you do, too!

One of my typical photographs is the parents combining their hands to make a heart on the tummy. Since we had Noah (soon to be big brother) I wanted to capture his hands, too. Some times I see my clients photographs and a few of them stick out in my mind. This is one that does this.

Newborn Photography Session

I had the pleasure of photographing a newborn on Sunday, March 29. Radley is about three weeks now. He’s such a happy go lucky baby. Radley has a two year old sister Bella who’s going to be such a great big sister. Please take a peek at a few of my favorite photographs from this session.

anthonylujanphotography-childphotography1181

I’ve always loved seeing photographs of babies looking over their mothers shoulders. So I had to photograph it for myself. I love seeing the toes in the photograph.

anthonylujanphotography-childphotography117

This was my first time taking the rings from the parents and using them in the photograph. I’ve always been a little worried about loosing them. This time I took the chance and I think it worked in the photograph below.

Bella is about 2 years old. She had to warm up to me which took about 45 mins. Once we played and watch Dora the Explorer did she come around. The photograph below was in between these stages.

Since Radley is three weeks old. The parents didn’t have a photograph of just them and their son. I thought this was a great tender moment as Radley is laughing looking up at his parents.

Anthony Lujan’s Individual Portraits

Today I want to change it up and highlight a couple of people I’ve enjoyed photographing.

| Natalie |

I’ve known Natalie for several years now. She’s a strong, caring and most of all a wonderful woman. Nat or Natally are my nicknames for her depending on my mood. If I’m bouncing it’s Natally and if I’m rushing it’s short and sweet Nat.

Natalie come to us from Georgia. She has a great southern accent which I totally love. She has that great charm and hospitality that you don’t find here in California. Here is one of my most favorite photographs from our photography session in Cerritos, CA. Thank you Natalie for trusting me and allowing me to photograph you!

| Kris |

Talk about a fun session! Kris is an adult entertainer that lives in the Hollywood Hills. He needed some new portraits that were a little different then the typical studio portrait. So during my consultation with him, I thought what would be perfect then a shoot on location in Hollywood. We started talking more and more and came up with a few locations in Hollywood. We did not want the typical photograph on the Hollywood strip or at a popular hot spot.  I mentioned the Hollywood Hills as the houses and backdrop of the Hollywood Sign would be an added bonus. He said that would be awesome! I had an idea to go outside of Madonna’s old house, you know the one she painted like candy stripes that upset the neighborhood. In my mind I had an idea to photograph Kris up against the gates.  It was so much fun to see my vision come to life. I think this is totally what I needed for this edgy guy. I hope you agree.

anthonylujanphotography-portraitphotography0021

If you’ve been to Hollywood, you’ll know it’s a lot of driving and turning through these hills. Each turn you make you see something. It’s kind of funny how this next photograph came about. We are leaving the gates of Madonna’s old house and walked to the left we see the Hollywood sign. When we parked we had come down the hill making tons of turns and right their in front of you is the Hollywood Sign. If this didn’t call out to me and say photograph me! So I had Kris standing out in the middle of the street starting to pose. I said stop and give me how you stand everyday. Here is the end result.
